Last year in March I was on Lake Powell with Tam on a houseboat watching and listening as Covid 19 spread ferociously across the globe. I wrote a short blog on “space” being the new luxury; not outer space but the space around us and the distance (now a common term, “social distance”) we needed to keep between us and the next person. This has spread to people wanting to keep space between them and their neighbours.  As soon as we returned home, the Real Estate market went berserk with people wanting a bigger home, more property and rural locations outside of major city centres.

Fast forward to a year later, I have had my second vaccine along with many of you reading this and the world, as we know it, is returning to normal…. make that a “new normal”.

With this new normal there are new threats and new issues and of course new “luxuries” to consider. Last month the

latest Engel & Völkers Global Guide or GG magazine was published, printed and delivered to our Shops around the world.

It’s about WATER, who has it, who doesn’t and what one man and his organization are doing about it.

Today’s luxury is …water.

We have a listing that is more relevant today than it was yesterday, last month or last year.

Kolapore Springs in the Canadian, Collingwood, Blue Mountains side of  “The Great Lakes”  is a natural wonder where 9  fresh water springs flow untouched out of the ground at a mother earth temperature of 46 degrees F. This  water flows to a fish hatchery that raises Fresh Water Trout species. The water then flows to a small lake, then runs to an outlet where 5,000 litres per hour make its way to the water shed, eventually finding  its way to Georgian Bay, Lake Huron 20 km away.

And did you know about the water problems at Hoover Dam? This is a very interesting read and I encourage you to sit, have a cup of coffee and read this article.

We take water for granted. We drink it, we bath in it, we wash our car and water the lawn with it, we flush it, we waste it.  How much of it do we have? Who has it, who doesn’t? Who wants it? Who owns it? Will we fight over it one day? Will it be the next OIL?

They search for water on other planets(or history of it ) because it means Life….. or that life existed.

Yes, WATER  is THE NEW LUXURY…..think about it as you are brushing your teeth, showering or simply turning on the tap for a cool, refreshing gulp of H2O.

Note; On April 26, Collingwood town council passed an interim control bylaw that prohibits any new construction of housing based on the Town not having enough treated water to service the needs of the Town population. The one-year moratorium was suggested and passed by Town Staff because the water treatment plant is running out of capacity for new development. (Stayner in Clearview has the same problem and is restricting development for the foreseeable future).

LOCAL MARKET DATA

The Southern Georgian Bay region comprises two distinctive markets.

Home sales in the Western Region, which includes Wasaga Beach, Clearview Township, Collingwood, The Blue Mountains, the Municipality of Meaford, and Grey Highlands, numbered 287 units in June 2021. This was a decline of 8.9% from June 2020.

Home sales in the West ern Region were 15.9% above the five-year average and 19% above the 10-year average for the month of June.

On a year-to-date basis, home sales in the Western Region numbered a record 1,544 units over the first six months of the year. This was up sharply by 62.9% from the same period in 2020.
